Kevin Henkes Author Study

Kevin Henkes was chosen as our lovely "Author of the Month."  He is my absolute favorite children's author, and I couldn't wait to share his stories with the kids.  These author studies are really allowing the students to find a "love" for reading.   They have found enjoyment in reading both of the books written by our two chosen authors; Robert Munsch and Kevin Henkes.  It's so important that children find those particular books in order to help them to find enjoyment in reading.

We made our own "diva star" glasses just like Lilly!  :)

We are THANKFUL!

Our Fun Friday activity was filled with thoughts of what all of us were thankful for in our lives.

Thanks to Grandma Karen for the adorable bows that I was able to put in our prize bin for bucket fillers!  What a great treat!

What's new in Room 9?

Some of the ladies snuggling up in the library during a snowy indoor recess! :)

We also started our "Engineering is Elementary" unit.  The students are learning about rocks, minerals, and the engineering and design process by creating mortar.  So far, they are loving every minute of it! I'd say we have some future geologists in the making.

One of my little girls brought me in an American Idol microphone.  Do you think I'm singing too much?  I love my little munchkins!

Parents, the kids have been asking me daily about my little guy Chandler!  Kiddos, here is my little cutie! :)

2nd grade update

Hi Friends,

Good news!  About 80% of the 2nd graders scored PROFICIENT on our "Adding WITH regrouping" chapter test!  I was so incredibly proud.  We have moved onto "Subtracting WITH regrouping."  This was a huge struggle for many of our students at first; however, I really think that our students are beginning to have a solid understanding of this concept.

We FINALLY finished our "Classifying Animals" book, also!  I am so proud of the incredibly smart 2nd graders I have in my class! :)  This week, we will be starting our 1st Engineering by Design unit on constructing a wall.  We will be learning about rocks, minerals, and creating an effective mortar to build a small wall with.  Very excited for the start of this unit!  Stay posted for an upcoming field trip that I am in the process of planning that correlates with the this unit.

Hope you are having a fantastic weekend with family and friends,

Miss Shannon Straka
